Meet Dr.Paul Hercock

Hi, my name is Paul Hercock, and I'm on a mission to help doctors learn about alternative careers outside of clinical practice. Several years ago, after 14 years as an NHS doctor, I successfully transitioned out of clinical medicine for a new career in the medical industry.

Have you ever wondered what else you could do with your medical training? Are you interested in applying your skills to the development of new treatments and life-saving devices? If so, this is the complete guide to moving into non-clinical careers beyond the ward.

What Is My Background?

I worked as a NHS doctor for over 14 years. Initially I was training to be a surgeon and then changed tack to pursue a higher specialist training in Emergency Medicine. Although there were plenty of positives to life in the NHS, I always had a nagging feeling that I wanted to do something else. I never felt entirely settled working in a clinical career.

The problem was, I had no idea what else I could do. After all, as a clinical doctor with such specialised skills, surely we are qualified for that and little else? So began a long (4 years.....) and tumultuous journey involving multiple false starts that eventually led me to an exciting, non-clinical career in the Pharmaceutical and Life Science sector.

Why Did I Leave Clinical Medicine?

In the end, I left clinical practice for two reasons: I never felt entirely settled working as a clinical doctor, and I had an irresistible urge to try something new. What I didn't want to do, however, was waste all my years of training. I was determined to start a new career that drew upon my clinical skills and my interest in promoting health and well being.

Working in the "Pharma" sector is a great way to meet these objectives - it allows doctors to work at the forefront of new treatment development while performing stimulating and challenging roles.

Why Did My Journey Take So Long?

In short, due to a lack of information. There was - and still is - very little advice out there for doctors who are interested in learning about other careers. That's really what Beyond the Ward is all about - putting the right information in the hands of doctors so they can make an informed choice about their own career.

The issue for me was I had no idea, at the time, of how to make the transition from clinical practice into a non-clinical career. In short, I DID IT THE HARD WAY. After multiple false starts, I realised that I had to adopt a new approach to my search for an alternative career. I needed an optimised application strategy, online profile, interview technique, and job search strategy. What I learned during my journey is the basis for our unique Workshops.

By making these changes, I eventually secured a position as a Medical Advisor with a multinational medical device company. And everything fell into place. One opportunity led to another and I have become extremely content in my professional and personal life. I want to help you find that too.

During my journey I learned so many valuable lessons about how to make the transition from clinical practice to life in the Pharmaceutical and Life Science Industry and I want to give this knowledge to you. This is why I have created a community to help find alternative careers for doctors & healthcare professionals.
